The #AI Decisions Pattern for Insurance. Where things get interesting!

Many insurers are still modernizing their operations, and AI is increasingly part of the equation. Traditional Machine Learning has its place. So does Generative AI.

But a new generation of AI introduces something different: the ability to interpret evidence and provide structured, probabilistic answers that business processes can act upon.

Services such as OpenAI's Decisions API and TypeSafe AI's Jev introduce a new architectural pattern that enables insurers to apply AI in a more controlled, measurable, and auditable way.

In the Decisions Pattern:

  • AI interprets evidence and provides structured answers.

  • Business rules evaluate those answers and determine the next steps.

  • People handle exceptions and decisions requiring human judgment.

In our latest article, we explore what we call the Decisions Pattern: its potential application to claims operations, how it fits into existing enterprise architectures, and the governance challenges insurers must address before adopting it.

The opportunity isn't to replace business rules with AI. It's to make them smarter by giving them access to information they couldn't previously interpret.
